BATTALION 1/22
COMPANY B
Dates Servd Nov69-Nov70
Comments: 31 years ago today, 20 Jun 1970, in the rugged, triple canopy mountainous terrain of Binh Dinh Province, north of An Khe, the two day Battle of the Rock began. The battle of "The Rock" was the largest engagement fought by the Regulars in 1970. An already undermanned and under-staffed 2nd Plt of Bravo Co. 1/22, consisting of appx 19 men, encountered what was later found to be the reinforced 3rd Co, 620th Bn, 2nd Training Rgt of the NVA. The NVA force, estimated at 120-140 men, chose to stand and fight in a virtually impenetrable huge natural rock formation near the top of a mountain. What was an incredibly strong defensive position, turned into a tomb for many of them. During the course of the action additional ground support was provided by the rest of Bravo Co, elements of Alpha Co 1/22 and Recon 1/22, B Co 2/35, 4 combat tracker teams, and a ground psyops team. Artillery support was provided by C Bttry 4/42 firing from FSB Niagara and also A Bttry 4/42. Air support included Ciders, Bulldogs and Hawkeyes (unk units); Blackjacks and Gambler Guns, 4th AVN Bn; Shamrocks(guns)D/1/10 Cav; Hornets(slicks) and Stingers(guns), 116th AHC; Cougars(guns) 57th AHC; Demons(slicks), 134th AHC; Shadows (AC119); Dustoff 23, air psyops teams; combat sky spots; and air strikes. At the end of the second day, the results were 29 NVA KIA, 2 WIA and 1 Chu Hoi. CIA equipment included 97 ruck sacks, 12 AK 47's and 1500 rds of AK ammo. US causalities were 1 KIA, Sgt Melvin Rutherford of B/1/22 and 2 WIA also from B/1/22. A thanks to all who were there and to all who supported and to Sgt Rutherford who gave his all. God truly watched over us on that mountain top so long ago.

Comments: I have a vet I'm trying to help that needs confirmation of his wounds and that they were recieved in the field during battle. To quote his words " I choose to stay in the feild because we were low on troops. We needed replacements and were told we would get them within a few days. I choose to stay and not take a medavac chopper to the hospital. I was treated in the field and our medic took out all the shrapnel he could find. It was the end of May 1967 on the Cambodian border and I was wounded in the left shoulder, right arm and neck from NVA mortar rounds." He was a grunt in the US Army 4th Inf. Div, Co B 1/22nd Inf. and if possible I need to find the medic that treated him in the field and get a confirmation letter from him. This man would also like very much to thank him for what he did. Any help that you can give me to locate this man I'd appreciate, you'd be helping not only me but a brother get what he's earned and deserves. Even though we know what Evacs he was later brought to his records can't be found according to the VA he was never wounded despite his scars. Because he stayed in the field it looks like they didn't bother with documenting his wounds. He only stayed 1 day at the Oasis and was then sent to Nha Trang but this took place June1st throuth the 6th. I have no idea why there is no documentation of this but there isn't. I'm also going to try to locate some others who served with him for letters but the one that will carry the weight will be the one from the medic. Thanks so much , God Bless you and be safe, SueC

Comments: Hello all: My dad "Swede" Henley landed on Utah Beach. He took the movies that some of you have seen through the Infantry organization. My family is planning a trip to Normandy next summer and would love to hear from others who have done the same. We'd like for it to be a meaningful family experience to help us understand more about what happened that day and Daddy's role in it. Daddy always spoke so highly of everyone he fought with - names I remember were Tommy Harrison, Bill Boice, Glenn Walker, John Ruggles. I know my mother, Lila, would love to hear from any of you. She's still doing great and just got her drivers license renewed for 5 more years at 87 yearss of age. My sister Suzie is great, too. She was a newborn when Daddy left Fort Jackson to ship out in the winter of 44. Regards to you all.

Companies A and B were immediately loaded aboard C-130 transports and flown to Pleiku where they took up defensive positions on the perimeter of what was later to become known as Camp Enari. It was not until January 30, 1972 that 1-22 again returned to the States, the longest serving battalion of the 4ID in the Vietnam war. Deeds not Words!

Comments: Every once in a while when we received C' Rations or ammo we would get a box of candy, Diet Freska and some unknown beer. All of it hot of course. A couple of times we resupplied in Tay Nihn or Dau Tang and the soda was maybe a Shasta flavor and not diet! On my way out of country I saw 7 up at Chu Chi and even Coke and Pepsi at Long Bien. I seem to remember flying to Guam with Joe Torres, 2nd Plt. D Co. 3/22 and I think we discussed the way supplies reached the troops in the field. While we thought it was backwards we agreed that we would problably done the same thing if we were in supply.

When he died he was Chaplain of our local Vietnam Veterans Post, his friends and I are trying to come up with a suitable tribute within the post. Thank you and God Bless.I'm glad you are home. That first really cold beer you had when you first got back to American soil from whichever foreign duty you did in whatever war it was. Yup, THAT beer. God knows we go through enough of it at the reunions, right Norm?

Comments: Wow, Orange Shasta and Diet Fresca. Up in the highlands, we had all the warm Canada Dry Rooti and Falstaff we could drink. The TOC would get ice every 4-5 days, but by the time the Old Man and the rest of the lifers got theirs, there wasn't much left for the RTOs. We had Mermites, but the ice we got wouldn't last much more than a day, which was better than nothing I guess.

Comments: Hello All! Actually I was thinking more on the line of San Miguel Beer which was imported from the Phillipines. You remember? Rusty cans gave it the special imported taste. Actually I traded my beer for sodas. I also traded the Salem Cigarettes for Coca Colas from the street vendors. I never smoked but I always received my ration of smokes from the "SP" packs. Tasty chocolates in those packs? Tasted like soap every time I tried to eat one. Anyone have any better luck with the taste of chocolate?

However I am Mary McDonald, and knew Paul when he first came back from WW2 and started college at the same time I did. (I read your "Co. A, lst Bn, 22nd Inf antry, 4th Infantry Division - Accounts of Paul Braim" on the internet.) I am fairly good at e-mail, but surfing the web is beyond me On 29 August this year I heard from a mutual friend from college days that Paul had died suddenly and is to be buried at Arlington Sept.25. My vote is for shasta orange and Coors beer.Coors Company always treated Nam vets with respect.Always had free beer at alot of vet functions even in the 70s and 80s when we were scum.thanks Coors.

Comments: Great website. Just wanted to add a little to the knowledge base. 4-22 also went to Haiti. I was a platoon leader and relieved some 2-22 soldiers at the FAHD. That was under LTC Edwin Davis (not David) and CSM Joe Johnson. Currently I am in command of C Company "Cold Steel" and earlier had HHC "Hammers." There is a tremendous difference in mission and training from light to digital mech, but the soldiers are still the same: proud to serve and ready to accomplish whatever mission we are given. Regulars!

BATTALION 1st/22nd
COMPANY A
Dates Servd Feb98-Aug01
Comments: As I drive through Baltimore, I see people hanging American flags going up on cars, houses, shops and buildings. But how many stood in the rain at 0630 to salute it? At the local bar, armchair generals tell me their pet theories on surgical bombing, special forces and CIA operatives. Meanwhile, the infantryman trains, as always, for he knows his skills will be called upon. The talking heads on TV talk about the carpet bombings, show pictures of "smart bombs" hitting buildings and call on "military experts" to explain tunnel clearing in the caves of Afganistan. As the Infantryman trudges through the mud/sand/snow holding his rifle in his hands, eternally at the ready. 18 year old kids protest at colleges, calling for peace and claiming "it was America's fault." The Infantryman, ever the stoic, marches forth: head held high. For every man who has served, for every Infantryman who has walked a mile in combat boots, for every soldier who has held his weapon in his hands and said "this nation is mine, and I will protect it." - The soldiers of today's Infantry, and the 22nd, stand ready. I know. I helped train some of them. SGT Kimzey A 1/175 ARNG

Comments: Just read the posting of Dave Schill, and could not agree with him more. With such a terrific webpage, I think we should definately have a memorial page. If there is a reason that we have not done one so far, I would really like to know what it is. It would seem like it would be an easy thing to do, especially since we have Brad Hull, who has done such a magnificent job in researching the KIA's for the 22nd Infantry Regiment. Hope we can get this matter resolved, I think this would add much to an already tremendous website.

BATTALION 1/22 Inf. Bn
COMPANY A and HHC Co.
Dates Servd Feb 1991-Aug 1993
Comments: I served in the A and HHC Co. of 1/22 Inf Bn between Feb of 1991 and Aug 1993. I never did so much traveling in such little time, pretty much going all the way around the world and being constantly in "Deployment Readiness Force 1" (DRF1) alert mode. Vacations were scarce, but the training was somewhat enjoyable (and painfully realistic). I can certainly say that I have some unforgettable memories from my time in the 1/22 Inf Bn., good experience that is worth living just once in a lifetime.

Dates Servd 8/'68 to 8/'69
Comments: Looking for any of you "Alphagators" from the 3rd/22nd Infantry who served in the '68 timeframe. I've found Bob Beecher who is living in Clio, Michigan. Like many of us who served in combat, he carries the weight of "sorrows and regrets" that have plagued him all these years. He would love to hear from those that he served with and remember him. Still looking for "Doc" Brann, I'll find him one of these days!!! His e-mail address is bobbeecher@webtv.net. Like many of us he needs to hear from those that he served with so long ago. Help is hard to accept for many of us, except from the ones that we served with. "DEEDS NOT WORDS"! Happy Holidays REGULARS. Andrew "Alday", a REGULAR by God!

Comments: Guy's I just want to let you know, I found and Identified the guy's in the picture I sent out. They were Bill O'Kernick and Wayne Henderson, unfortunately Bill is dealing with a lot of problems and Wayne took a hit in Sept. 68 and is paralysed from the neck down. I did have chance to talk to some great guy's that were with my Brother at Cui Chi and FSB Buell. I am thankful I found out how my Brother was KIA, and that his death was quick. I would like to Thank everyone that had part in my uncovering all the details. GOD BLESS you ALL and keep up the good work. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
