On arriving in Vietnam in Feb 69 I was unfortunate enough to be assigned to the
3/22 Regulars - although I really wanted to be with those handsome looking guys
in the Wolfhounds or Manchus or Golden Dragons but no they assigned me to the
ugly mob, the Regulars. ( Didn’t it take a Limey to give you your name ) I can’t
remember one guy in the 3/22nd you would want your daughter to come home with,
However after remonstrating with every officer I could find, I was required to
stay and assigned to E co Recon Platoon. These guys were even worse looking than
the line grunts in the rest of the battalion and here I was forced to be part of
them. Well - Recon / E co and the rest of 3/22nd I guess that the above has got
your attention ! So why the email – not just to say hello. No - the real reason
is to ask if any of you from Recon etc, are thinking of making it to the reunion
next year. Although god knows why I want to see any of your mugs again after all
these years. I am incidentally, for those who are still interested after reading
the above two paragraphs, the English guy who served in E co Recon in 69 – 70. I
have been back in England for the last twenty-nine years and I am endeavoring to
make the reunion in St Louis. I Found this site in the last few months and take
this opportunity to say what a superb site it is. Maintained, no doubt, with a
deal of hard work. I was stupid enough to carry the radio for awhile so some of
you line grunts or even navy river tars may remember me over the airwaves. I
apologize to the guys whose names I can’t remember and the ones incorrect or
devoid of first names -- but some of the guys names that I do recall are :-
Steven Campbell, Ron Wilson, Big Jim Linder, Charles Montagna, Rosemyer, John
Dibble, Dolan, Blue, Ginger Lazemby, Jones, Gene Ladnier / Floyd Huff, Pete
Bronstad, Ron Hodges, Bob Young, all the medics and radar guys, and of course
Laird “Starcluster” Bradley. With the greatest respect I remember the guys who
sacrificed all ( including - Harvey Hassler, (Oliver Coleman “Crip platoon”) Jim
Grifasi, Ken Maxwell, Bill Gay, Richard Haile and no doubt more, that sadly I
cannot recall. RIP ). ( And I know there are veterans and families still hurting
) I am not on some kind of mission to make contact with ex E.co / Recon people
or Line Grunts but should any of you care to respond, I would be pleased to hear
from you. – To all those I know and who do not wish to respond please take my
good wishes for the future with you. May it keep you safe. It’s been a long
time. J. Roby --.Wigan, Lancashire, England. PS -- And for what it is worth, we
would all like to choose our war, but seldom can -- I am proud to have served
with you all.

Hello. I have been working on a project since 1987 in which I have been
contacting veterans of WWII. To date almost 4,500 veterans from 35 countries
have been contacted. All the information is being used in two ways: 1) put into
a book telling of the war as seen BY THE VETERAN; and 2) as information for my
WWII Living History group. In this group we do displays for schools, churches,
libraries, museums, etc. All that we take out is original, from the uniforms to
the equipment, personal items to rations, and everything in between. I have a
few questions I send out. If you are a veteran of WWII, and would be interested
in helping with the project, please contact me. Or if you would like more
information about what I am doing, please contact me. It is important to collect
these stories before it is too late. Thank you all for your time, and I hope to
hear from many of you soon. Sincerely, Wm.T. Ripley

Hello My name is Brian Anthony and I am currently in my senior year at West
Point. I will be graduating in June of this year and will be commissioned in the
Infantry. I stumbled upon your site before while doing history research. During
this search I had the pleasure of making contact with Stan Tarkenton who served
with the 22nd during WWII. He has been extremely helpful to me in my research. I
am eternally grateful for his help and freindship. He also introduced me to your
newsletter and I am now a proud member of your organization. I thoroughly
enjoyed your last newsletter. Reading about the brotherhood you have all
developed and maintained throughout the last century of conflict makes me very
proud and excited to enter into my new profession this summer. However I am not
out of here yet! I still need to complete my senior history thesis which is on
tactical air support in the ETO. Perhaps the most important point of view to
consider when analyzing this issue is that of the infantryman. If any WWII vets
out there have any stories about the effectiveness of tactical air support
during their tours of duty in Europe and would be willing to share them I'd
really appreciate it. Whether its good or bad, I am searching for the hard
truth, and if you would be willing to help me half as much as Stan I would be
overwhelmed. If you'd be willing to help please e-mail me at
x12374@exmail.usma.army.mil or write to PO Box West Point, NY 10997. Once again
thank you for what all of you have done for our country and for sharing your
experiences with myself and others in the hope that we may learn from your
experiences. Respectfully, CDT Brian Anthony

Saw your Web link and remembered the 2nd Batt. of the 22th Infantry at Soui Cut
after the Jan. 1, 1968 attack on thier base. They supported us with Artillery
when my Batt. the 4/9 Infantry (Manchus) were overun at Bo Tuc on Dec. 19, 1967.
We (Manchus) releived the 2/22 on or about Jan.2-3, 1968 at Soui Cut because
they had been hit hard and needed to be pulled out and had to go back to Katum??
or some other large base for a stand down and to regroup. If this is the 2/22 I
remember; I was amazed at the twin 40 that had one gun knocked out with maybe an
RPG? but the other 40 mm kept pumping those 40mm rounds out one at a time. Dec.
of 1967---thru Feb.1968 was a hell of time to be on the Cambodian border. We all
paid a heavy price but the NVA paid dearly as well. I'll close with our Manchu
Motto, "Keep up the Fire!" Bill Fitch, 4/9 Alpha Co. Aug.1967-1968

NEVER FORGET - 59 years ago today - Sunday, December 7, 1941, "a day that will
live in infamy" - without provocation, the Japanese attacked the US at Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii plunging us into World War II. For the next almost four years,
war waged around the world and 480,000 Americans and millions of others died.
Included in this total was almost 1700 members of the 22nd Infantry Regiment.

Comments: As a former Ranger and a Vietnam Veteran (B Co. 3/22 1969), I was appalled to hear that the army was going to take the Ranger Beret and give it to the entire army. Obviously the Chief of Staff of the Army (Gen. Shinseki) is not ranger qualified or he would not have ever made this decision. The Black Beret was and is a symbol of excellence, hard work and sacrifice. Just declaring it to be army wide will not make everyone better, it will just degrade the symbol. If this decision is continued to completion, I for one will never again wear my cherished beret.

As a matter of fact I took Basic Training with 4 of the men who got killed in this battle namely Gibbons, Ledford, Muller and my good friend Greer from the 3rd Platoon. I believe this error shuld be corrected immediately out of respect for these men who paid the Supreme Sacrifice. Without this initial contact who knows what the outcome would have been.
