Potts was with the 4th Infantry Division, Company "E" when it landed on Utah Beach, on the morning of June 6, 1944. My father was killed 16 days later while advancing to Cherburg. He is still there in Normandy at the Normmandy/American Cemetary in plot F, row 11, grave 43. I was 18 months old when he died. I saw my father 5 times before he died. I have since visited the cemetary where he is buried only once. My mother passed away about three weeks ago. Now they may be together. I would like to thank ALL the ones that gave their every thing to underwrite America's freedom. All of you made such sacrifices that only the ones that have lost loveones that can appreciate this great country and you have made it what it is today. May God bless all of you and your families. I just wish my father ws here to see the museums and could enjoy the things that we have. I wish Mr. Webster could have come up with the words that could express my gratitude. thanks Aaron Potts

Name: Bob Babcock Website: http:/// Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Marietta, GA Time: 2000-05-29 17:46:40 Comments: Memorial Day 2000 - For the fourth year in a row, I lay a wreath today on the grave of PFC Albert Collins, first 22nd Infantry and 4th Infantry Division soldier to die in Vietnam (on 9/3/66). Normally, Tom Reid, last CO of I/3-22, and CO of the last soldier killed in WWII, Carl Baker, is with me for this solemn occasion. However, this year, Tom is taking his grandsons to visit the battlefields of the 22nd Infantry Regiment in Europe and missed our Memorial Day ceremony. Although the wreath is on the grave of Albert Collins, it is there to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice of all 22nd Infantry Regiment soldiers from the War of 1812 up to the last one who gave his life in defense of the American way of life. We are honored to be able to perform such a tribute to our fallen comrades. Deeds not Wors! Bob Babcock, President, 22nd Infantry Regiment Society.

These few gallant men have devoted much of their later years in the continuing support of the 22nd Infantry Regiment Society. Is it not about time we old dog faces have offered more of real support to assist them in this worthwhile endeavor? They have to be over-worked! If we do not help them, who will? They will never complain. Come on! Let's volunteer one more time. Why not let them know today how you and I can help them with their labors for the Society? Ask them, "What can I do to help?"

I was assigned to C CO. 3/22 as a mortar crewman ( 81MM 11C20 ) at FSB CROOK and stayed about a week and then the ARMY, in all its wisdom, transferred me to B CO. 2/22 ( M ) where I stayed until 11/70. I worked in the FDC for the mortar platoon. I usually rode behind the .50 cal with the commo helmet on. I listened to AFVN on a portable radio also, and to this day when I hear "No Time Left" by the Guess Who on the radio, I can still smell the diesel and the dust and the wind riding down the road. While I was between units I got to see the Bob Hope Christmas show. I will never forget the first day and night in Cambodia on 1 MAY 1970. Would like to hear from anyone I served with. Name: James Hardin Website: http:/// Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Columbia, PA Time: 2000-05-23 06:32:12 Comments: The May-June 2000 issue of ARMOR (PB 17-00-3) has an article titled "The Battle of Soui Tre: Viet Cong Infantry Attack on a Fire Base Ends in Slaughter When Armor Arrives" It was written by 1SG Christopher P. Worick, who is currently the First Sergeant of Co C 2-34 Armor at Fort Riley, KN. Not too bad an article, although it seems to imply that the tanks of Armor saved the day. I could be wrong, but I only recall two M48s arriving with Recon Platoon & Co C 2/22 that morning. I am not discounting Armor, we were glad to have them as well as their M88 Recovery Vehicle in the assault line. For that matter we would have welcomed a Snack Truck as long as it could keep up. I sent some corrections to ARMOR and they said they would include them in the next issue. They also sent me a copy of the article in Adobe .PDF format. It requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free from www.adobe.com. It is 1.4mb, if anyone wants a copy, let me know and I will send you one.

Name: Bob Babcock Website: http:/// Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Marietta, GA Time: 2000-05-08 21:34:38 Comments: 55 Years Ago Today - VE Day - May 8, 1945. Eleven months and two days after storming ashore on Utah Beach, our fantastic WWII vets brought Hitler to his knees and ended the "1000 Year Reich". History will never forget the triumphs and tragedies of this great Regiment as they moved from Utah Beach to Cherbourg, on through more hedgerow country to St. Lo, then on through Paris and into Belgium and to become the first Allied troops to breach the Siegfried Line and walk on German soil. The horrific battle in the Hurtgen Forest, helping hold the southern shoulder of the Bulge, back through the Siegfried Line and then on across Germany until they earned the victory they had been fighting so hard for - that is the legacy of our men of the 22nd Infantry Regiment (and 4th Infantry Division) in WWII. Let us never forget their efforts, their successes, and especially let us never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our way of life. Deeds not Words!

Claims he feels guilty of never being in combat and NEEDS to go to VN so he can unload this heavy baggage of guilt he has been carrying all these years. I sent an E-mail to the station informing them that this guy had 10 more years to see some combat if he really wanted to. What an insult. I figure there must be some mgt. at the TV station carrying some "wannebe guilt" also. I also reminded them that 30 years ago real soldiers went to Cambodia and they weren't looking to make any TV nightly news. Best Regards, Steve A/3/22/25th 69-70

I would like to invite all WWII veterans who read this to drop me a line. I am especially interested in all stories dealing with your time in combat, and as much detail as you can provide on what you did while on the line, what you wore, what personal items you carried, pretty much anything. The information is going to two places: 1) The stories will be going into a book telling of the war as seen through the veterans eye's, and not some "Hollywood ideal". 2) All the descriptions of uniforms, equipment, etc will be used by my living history group to make our public displays that much better. Any and all help is appreciated. All I ask is you include your name, rank, and unit. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks in advance. William Ripley

Thanks for all the good poop on the men of the 22nd Infantry. We were there, we did our thing. The only thing that kinda bothers me is the fact that from what I have read on the net so far, some people seem to the knocking the recon guys! That ain't fair! My boys of E Company, 3/22, "Nams Angels" went out, kicked some major bootie, and provided a lot of incredibly valuable info for the guys back at bat tock. We took a lot of risks, lost a few "loved ones" but did our thing. Natch we were glamorous, what with our combat motorcycles, cammo fatigues, crip identity, and all that bull, but we went into some spots where many of the regular grunts wouldn't ever, never want to be. So, cut us a break guys. We were all there. My boys did their thing to the max! An, I'm awful proud of them. PS I went back as a Snake eater, Special Forces, did my 1-1, 1-2, thing, but the boys of the 22d are the GREATEST! "DEEDS NOT WORDS"

MG Ruggles was Executive Officer of the 22nd Infantry Regiment from the D-Day invasion through the end of February 1945 when he took over as Regimental Commander. He led the Regiment through the remainder of the war and returned to the States with the Regiment to prepare to go fight in Japan. He served a tour in Vietnam with MACV and also commanded the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, KS prior to his retirement. No one had more and better stories or loved the Regiment more than MG John Ruggles. He was truly a man of "Deeds ot Words". He is sorely missed by those of us who knew and loved him. When I arrived at Fort Carson in the summer of 1970 from my first tour in RVN, the battalion was known as 3rd Battalion, 61st Infantry, 5th Infantry Division. We were a mech battalion and most of the troops were all returnees from RVN. In my platoon we had only one private who had not been to RVN out of about 43 personnel. I left C/2/22 after less than a year and went back to RVN for a second tour but was proud to be a Regular By God for the brief period I was there. I am currently a life member of the Manchu Association, the 9th Infantry Regiment's version of the 22nd's Society. (Served with 1/9 in Korea in 1978/79) Best of luck and God speed to the 22nd!

Name: Bob Babcock Website: http:/// Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Time: 1999-12-30 19:14:40 Comments: 100 years ago - end of December 1899 - as we enter the new century and millenium, let us not forget what our fellow 22nd Infantry veterans were doing 100 years ago in the Philippines Insurrection. December 25, thirty-six men of Company L, 3-22, all that were able to march, were sent to Aritao, to investigage reported insurgents. A force had been there, but had gone farther into the mountains. Several days later, a superannuated Tagalog, the tool of a reformed insurgent, began working strange influences among the people of Solano. In a whining, sepulchral voice, he declated himself to be the "Holy Ghost." Immediately it became more difficult to obtain rice; burden bearers became impossible. Even after this fraud was exposed, his influence was still felt. December 29, the battalion quartermaster, after most arduous work, brought the battalion shoes and clothing, so sorely needed. January 7, 1900, the battalion, under orders, again crossed the mountains. Again Camp Misery was sighted; again the cross-crowned Caballo Sur was climbed; again men suffered. January 16, 1900, the battalion reported at Regimental headquarters at Arayat.......Throughout this last great campaign, the battalion gained no honor of engagement - its record is that of duty and of endurance. It marched nearly five hundred miles on eight days reduced rations; it lost eight men - one killed by the enemy, seven dying of disease. Source - A History of the 22nd United States Infantry, November 1904. Deeds not Words! - let us never forget those who came before us. Bob Babcock, President, 22nd Infantry Regiment Society.

I will never forget the first day and night in Cambodia on 6 MAY 1970. Would like to hear from anyone I served with. Name: Bob Babcock Website: http:/// Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Marietta, GA Time: 2000-06-27 08:58:24 Comments: 50 Years Ago - June 25, 1950 - The North Korean Army stormed across the demarcation line into South Korea and the Korean War began. Although the 22nd Infantry Regiment did not serve in Korea (we were actively facing off the Russians in Germany at the start of the Cold War), many of our veterans did fight in the Korean War. Many of the senior NCO's and officers who trained us and fought with us in Vietnam earned their first Combat Infantryman's Badge in Korea between 1950 and 1953. For many of our World War II vets, they were once again called into harm's way and earned their second Combat Infantryman's Badge in Korea. Although it is often called "The Forgotten War", let none of us ever forget that whenever an American stands in harm's way in defense of our way of life, that American and his actions can never be forgotten by any true American. Let us all find time to acknowledge to our Korean War veteran friends that we truly appreciate the sacrifices they made for us - and that they will never be forgotten by the men and women of our 22nd Infantry Regiment Society. This battle in the rugged, triple canopy mountain terrain of Binh Dinh Province, north of An Khe, came to be known as the Battle of The Rock. The name derived from the rock formations on the mountain where the battle occurred. When the smoke finally cleared two days later, NVA casualties were listed as 29 KIA, unknown WIA, 2 CIA. US casualties were 1 KIA and 2 WIA. Ninety-Seven enemy ruck sacks were recovered at The Rock. God was truly with us on that mountain long ago.

Name: Bob Babcock Website: http:/// Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Marietta, GA Time: 2000-06-19 10:57:01 Comments: At 7:30AM today, June 19, 2000, Gerry Howard, Arlington Monument Fund chairman, turned the final bolt fastening our ten foot tall bronze 4th Infantry Division patch into the granite base to complete the major part of our Monument installation on the road leading into Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Still to be completed this week, probably yet today or tomorrow, is the sand blasting of the wording - "4th Infantry Division - Steadfast and Loyal" into the face of the granite and the addition of dirt and ivy plantings into the granite base. This dream, started by our World War I predecessors, is now a reality! I do not have the words to express my gratitude for the leadership and hard work done by Gerry Howard to make this day happen. Without Gerry's passion, leadership, and hard work, this would still be in the same dream stages where it was for 80 years. As previously announced, a mini-dedication ceremony will be held at the Monument at 3:00PM on Thursday, June 29 where soil samples from all of our stateside posts and foreign battlefields will be added to the planter. Gerry Howard is arranging for having the ceremony professionally videotaped. The formal dedication of the Monument will be held in July 2001 when the national reunion convenes in Washington, DC. This is a great day in the history of the 4th Infantry Division as this Monument, dedicated to all past, present, and future 4th Infantry Division soldiers is available for all to see and enjoy. In the first 30 minutes after it was installed, Gerry told me two 4ID veterans had passed by and stopped to talk about their service with the 4ID. Please pass this note on to other 4ID vets who have been eagerly awaiting this great news.

He is hard pressed to remember details, due to his advancing age and the degenerative effects of serious head wounds he received from a German mortar sometime after the Hurtgen Forest campaign and before the Ardennes and the Battle of the Bulge. His name is William Clayton (Bill) Flett and he was a platoon leader in E company, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry division. Unfourtunately I have not discovered which battalion yet. He was a Lieutenant when wounded and was discharged as a Captain. If anyone who might read this has any recollection of him, or has any tips or tricks for a new researcher, please pass them on. My father-in-law is a proud veteran and deserves to be honored. I only hope that I can assemble his story before he passes on so that the family and others can have it for future generations and so that we can all remember and cherish the memories and deeds of the men that sacrificed so much and paid for our freedom with their blood, flesh, and spirits. Thank you, Andy Madden.
