Earl Haupt, and Townsend each received the DSC for recapturing it. Gen Westmoreland presented the award at 3rd Brigade Hq in September 1967. He gave them both a ride back to MACV in order for them to catch the freedom bird home. |

Immediately flown to the central highlands aboard C-130's, the battalion remained in Vietnam until returning to the States in January 1971 - the longest depoyment of any of the 4th Infantry Division units. |

Brauer Website: Referred by: Net Search From: Maryland Time: 1998-07-30 06:08:01 Comments: I am doing some research for my brother who was in the 22nd infantry, Mechanized division between 1967 and 1968. At the beginning he manned the 50 caliber and later was a driver. He has told me many interesting and terrifying stories about his experiences in Viet Nam, especially his accounts of the "human wave" where the ratios of American troops to the attacking forces was very low and a wonder that anyone could survive such an attack . He was interested to know that this internet site exists and is looking forward to see what I can retrieve for him. My brother has received at least on purple heart and a bronze star during his tour. I seem to recall that the bronze star was for maintaining and defending his position after being wounded and continuing to under attack . One of the most memorable days in a sad way for him is Nov. 25, 1967 when at least two of the soldiers in his squad were KIA, one was a Lt. and the other I seem to recall a private. I don't remember off hand where it was but any of you veterans that read this will probably know. I am very proud of him as is the rest of our family. These events happended a long time ago now, but they are fresh in his mind as if they were yesterday. I will never know the true experiences and feelings that one goes through from such events, but the more I learn from historical sources such as this the more I can at least begin to understand. |

I am cruising all of the veteran sites that I can find to reaffirm the unique bond of patriotism we veterans share, no matter when or where we served. I think that any site celebrating our brothers and sisters in uniform is an honorable endeavor and am proud to call you family. I am in pursuit of continuing the effort by trying to compile a book about women veterans (hopefully, the first in a series of such veteran books) and need your help in finding our sisters who would be willing to share an experience or two of their active duty days. "In Her Own Words" is simply a book in progress of essays written by women veterans. If you know of someone who might be interested in sharing her story(ies), please pass my e-mail address on to her. Thank you and God bless. Keep up the good work! Brenda |

From: Cary, North Carolina Time: 1998-07-27 10:31:17 Comments: Just finished Mr. Wilson's book and wanted to stop by and say thanks to all those who answered the call. I truly believe that the WWII generation was the finest that this nation ever produced and I am proud of your accomplishments. It is a result of your sacrifice that I am able to raise a family, go to work and do all the mundane things that make life today so trivial. I will never have to endure the pain and suffering that you did. So it is hard for me and I guess this nation (for the most part) to understand what war is like. But, I am very grateful and thankful that you accomplished the mission you were assigned. Again thank-you 4th Infantry Division |

I would like to correspond or interview any 22nd Infantry veterans who took part in the exercise- any information or recollections would be very valuable. I'm grateful for your help in this project. We used his book "IF YOU SURVIVE" in the History of the Military Art class at the United States Military Academy this last spring and several of the cadets and faculty members expressed an interest in learning more about George Wilson's later career, etc. If someone can get word to Mr. Wilson and he is willing, I would love to speak with him. The cadet's enjoyed reading his book and found it very educational. Thanks, PROF Steve R. Waddell Department of History United States Military Academy West Point, NY 10996 (914) 938-5084 |
| Name: Bob Babcock Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Marietta, GA Time: 1998-06-06 06:03:44 Comments: D-Day story - Martin King, H/2-22 (attached to 3-22) and his machine gun crews may have been the first seaborne infantrymen to land on D-Day. At H-Hour minus 1 (about 0530), he and his machine gun crews climbed down the rope ladders into an LCP and headed for the beach. Landing about 0550 and wading in from 100 yards off shore with 80 pounds of ammo on their backs, they came ashore at the planned spot of their landing - to the right of a windmill silo structure clearly visisble on the beach. They dug in their two machineguns and waited for the first wave of troops to land at H-Hour (0630). "It seemed like an eternity because no wave of our troops came in behind us." After about an hour and a half, all kinds and sizes of firepower began coming in and going out. They hooked up with some men from the 101st Airborne who had missed their drop target by seven or eight miles. "We had begun to return fire on two pill boxes, by now, as there was more light of day, but all we could do was hold our position and wonder where in the world everybody else was." As we all know from our history, the 4th Division units were landed about 2000 yards to the left of the beaches they were scheduled to hit (tide, navy guidance, smoke, and other problems). It was mid-day before Martin's unit hooked up with the 3-22 as they worked down the beach toward the original objective. "The thought came to me that I had taken a fighting unit to war and no one came." This is part of one man's experiences on that "Longest Day" - we would love to hear from others. |

| Name: Bob Babcock Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Marietta, GA Time: 1998-05-07 13:25:31 Comments: 53 years ago today, May 7, 1945 - hostilities came to an end in the European theater of operations in WWII (actual surrender date was May 8 - on Harry Truman's birthday). Bill Boice, founder of our 22nd Infantry Regiment Society, described that day as follows: "There was no revelry last night, no drunkenness, no shouting, no flag waving, no horns blowing; there was a sober realization that it was all over, at least so far as Europe was concerned, and that we, by the strength of arms and our own courage, had, with the help of God, completely and finally defeated everything that the warped and twisted soul of a perverted nation could hurl at us. We take no undue pride in what we have done, for we are sobered by the blood of our comrades which cries up to us from every foot of ground from Normandy to Berlin and from Holland to Italy. We have done what we had to do for you, and for our own peace of mind." Deeds not Words! And a salute to those men of the 22nd Infantry Regiment who fought so gallantly from Utah Beach on June 6, 1944 to May 7, 1945 to make this day possible. |

Let us not forget those members of our Regiment who fought in this turning point battle of the Vietnam war - an American battlefield victory but a public relations defeat. |

Rodriguez Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Phoenix, Arizona Time: 1998-01-23 21:42:00 Comments: I was overwhelmed with pride upon seeing the photo of my father, J.H. Rod Rodriguez, at the Hurtgen Forest in Germany. The photo brought back memorable moments which only a son and father can share. We took many wonderful photos. Some great ones at the landing beaches on Utah and Omaha. Our mission was to locate the monument at the Hurtgen Forest. The area was significant in a few ways. Not only was heroism by the enemy recognized by the 22nd Infantry but this marked the location where my father was stopped from advancing toward Germany. Through the grace of God, the bullet only destroyed his leg and not his life. Thank you for placing the photo in your web page. Our mission was to retrace the landing on D Day, 1944 and continue to the forest. Mission accomplished. Deeds not words. |
